First of all - Kudos Mr Sarkozy - very well said sir - no matter which translation of his speech you read the message is clear
For a civil libertarian this is a troubling issue. Part of me feels people should be allowed to wear whatever they want, whenever they want, if people voluntarily choose to cover their faces, that’s their business and government (or fearful religious zealots) should keep their hands off people’s wardrobes.
However, the burka itself deeply disturbs me.
The burka is supposedly worn because men cannot control themselves - to avoid inflaming men's arousal.
I am a civilised modern western man who has total control of myself. Contrary to beliefs promoted by those religious zealots who advocate imprisonment of women within these morbid black cells, I can see and speak to a women whose face (or come to that body) is naked without loosing control of my libido or, more to the point my conscience, and without therefore forcing myself upon her.
As a modern western male, I find it deeply offensive that some Muslim women are taught by their bigoted supremacist religious leaders (and equally deluded husbands) that men are out of control and libel to rape on sight! I have no idea how primitive Muslim men are, but I am capable of controlling my urges!
Finally, in Western society, uncovered faces are the norm - your face is your identity - it's time to step up Mr Brown, Mr Obama - follow the brave Mr Sarkozy's lead, join the debate, help to stop this symbol of female oppression, this disgusting fissiparous subjugation of women and simultaneously destroy this abhorrent religious 'holier-than-thou' lie about men.
