On September 7th 1940 Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe began the Blitz, the non-stop bombing of the United Kingdom, destroying hundreds of buldings in cities and towns all across the country. Portsmouth, Southampton, Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, Birmingham, Coventry, Nottingham, Norwich, Ipswich, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Newcastle, Glasgow, Belfast and London all suffered. During the nightly bombing raids on London, that continued to May 16th 1941, people took shelter in basements and underground (subway) stations where they slept on makeshift beds amid primitive conditions with no privacy and poor sanitation facilities. 32,000 civilians were killed and To all those whom lost loved ones in the Twin Towers, there is a way forward, a path through the tragedy, as so many surviving relatives of those who died in the Blitz can testify. | |
